Christopher Lutyens composes, performs and records his music at his home studio in Jamestown, on Conanicut Island, the crown jewel of Narragansett Bay. The small community where he lives is at the heart of Southern New England's offshore lobster industry.
His children, his music, and lobstering are the loves of Chris's life. As a lobsterman, he was one of the highest producing boat captains in the history of the business. He spent nearly three decades harvesting the delicacy from the depths of the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. As a composer, he often dreamed of the day when he could write and produce his music along with his memoirs. That day arrived when his beautiful Ralph Stanley 44' lobster boat caught fire and sank while Chris watched helplessly from a life raft as he awaited rescue.
A new chapter in his life then began.
Before he turned fifty, he completed and released his first CD of original music to high acclaim. His release, "Indecision," was "pick of the week" when it was introduced on the Internet. Presently, he is finishing his autobiography, a powerful story of high adventure and personal conflict. Balancing his life at sea with his family life ashore was a delicate and formidable task.
He divides his time between the written word and music, his lifelong passion. Influenced by the great jazz masters of the ivories, Keith, Chick, Lyle Mays and others, the sound flows from Chris as he invents it. Playing the piano, bass, acoustic guitar and drums, Chris creates the music of a quartet — the Jazzlobsterman and his Single Side Band.
